Iron Curtain Trail
The Iron Curtain Trail, also known across Europe as EuroVelo 13, follows the route of the former Iron Curtain for long stretches. Gmünd is one of the starting points of the Austrian route, which continues via Litschau, Drosendorf and Thayatal National Park towards Retz, crossing the border into Czechia several times.
The first stage from Gmünd to Litschau is pleasantly level and runs through woodland and open countryside, making it suitable for a leisurely day trip. You can also combine the ride with the Waldviertelbahn railway: cycle one way and return comfortably by train – a dedicated bicycle carriage makes this possible.
Rental bicycles and e-bikes are available from local providers. As sections of the route and signage are occasionally updated, it is advisable to check the latest route description before setting off. Your hosts will be happy to advise you on stage lengths and places to stop for refreshments.
